In November 2025, Wardle Marine Services constructed a cantilever jetty for a private residence in Oxford. The client wanted a standard jetty for launching a kayak; however, after enduring a long planning application, the original plan of driving piles into the riverbed as a mooring system was denied by the council. Instead, we agreed with the client to install a cantilever jetty.
We had a structural engineer inspect the structure to ensure a cantilever jetty could be supported. He took a few bricks out of the wall and looked at the structural composition of the building’s footings to determine the size of the anchor bolts and footplates required to support the platform. After getting the green light, our team got to work!
We drilled steel rods into the brickwork to attach custom-made galvanised steel support arms and constructed a sub-frame out of C24 pressure-treated timber.
For the deck itself, we used Cladco synthetic recycled plastic decking, which is a cost-effective option when you want long-lasting and stylish decking.
We cut the decking on site to ensure it would fit with the contours of the building. During construction, we decided with the client to leave a gap near the wall on the top step to allow water from the drain to flow down into the river, instead of onto the jetty.
The original design had no trim under the main walkway. Once the jetty was built, we decided it would look better to add a trim.
After the client spent years getting permission for the jetty to be built, it only took approximately 2.5 days to build!
This was a great job for the team, and the guys very much appreciated the cake the client gave them, too! Yum!
