In Hanningfield Reservoir, our client had a 100m x 2.5m pipe pontoon with a 15m x 2m hammerhead, originally built in 2010. The pontoon was suffering from rotting wooden bearers, which provide integral support in the platform’s frame, so the client wanted just the bearers replaced, not the floatation devices, rest of the frame or decking.

Our team spent a few weeks carefully removing the decking in sections to expose the bearers and replace them with recycled plastic beams, which will last far longer than the wood did. Then all the decking was reattached.

We used two Modular Cube pontoons with rope handrails, one on either side of the pipe pontoon, to provide a safe working platform and to store materials. These pontoons were easily moved along the pipe pontoon and secured, making the whole project easier to navigate and manage.

This particular pontoon was designed to be split into two sections. Due to the larger size of the lake in winter, both sections are joined to create one long platform. In the summer, where the lake shrinks as water evaporates, the platform is split in half, shortening it so it is not just resting on the shore. After a light aircraft crashed into the reservoir in December 2025, the pontoon was split and moved to assist in the recovery efforts.

We did not install the pontoon originally, but WMS offers a similar design, which we can customise to meet your buoyancy requirements. HD Pipe Pontoons are very strong, even more so than RotoDock, and come with the benefit of being quite flexible. This combo makes them ideal for heavy duty use or for use in rough sea conditions. These pontoons can even have outboard motors attached, turning them into rafts!
